Resumo/Abstract: Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds are maps which extremize a natural Dirichlet energy: they include geodesics and minimal surfaces. We will discuss some recent results on harmonic maps from surfaces including new criteria for when a harmonic map is of “finite uniton number” — work with A. Aleman — and new explicit constructions of harmonic maps — work with B.A. Simões and M.J. Ferreira.
